Having done well to survive an awkward visit to Hampton on Saturday, Sutton made sure that their efforts weren't wasted in Tuesday's replay and set up a second round trip to Welling, although not quite as easily as the scoreline suggests.

Despite the boost of a well-taken early goal from Craig Watkins, who chased a long pass down the right and lifted the ball over the advancing Kieron Drake from the corner of the penalty area, U's struggled to find any real rhythm in the first half on a surface that suffered more from the heavy pre-match rain in some places than others and was therefore a little unpredictable.

With steadier finishing Hampton might have at least been level at half time, but they were twice undone by the pace of Watkins early in the second half and despite some spirited efforts were never seriously in with a chance from then on. The one big concern for Sutton, though, will have been the departure of Watkins with an ankle injury with quarter of an hour left, after a heavy challenge from defender Jamie Jarvis that wasn't even punished with a free kick.

Hampton twice came close to cancelling out Watkins' early goal from free-kicks, firstly when Nigel Brake fouled Michael Currie on the edge of the area and Richard O'Connor's free-kick seemed to be blocked by team-mate Luke Fontana before Phil Wilson was needed, although U's keeper did well to keep out Andy Morley's follow-up from the rebound. Moments later Lewis Gonsalves was penalised for a push slightly further out, and this time O'Connor's shot fell to Jarvis who skied his shot over.

Wilson also had to be alert to deny Morley and Currie before the break - Currie's 20 yard shot threatening to creep inside his left hand post - but U's did still look dangerous when they could sustain their attacking moves. One quick counter involving Watkins and Matt Gray ended with Gray's low shot being well saved, and the Eddie Akuamoah jinked his way in from the right before stinging Drake's hands.

Hampton were handicapped by the loss of Fontana just before the break when he fell awkwardly under a challenge from Joff Vansittart, and suffered further as they conceded two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. Tony Quinton instigated the first with a good run from defence before sending Watkins free down the left. The exceptional pace was followed with a good deep cross, and although Drake got a hand to Akuamoah's header it was over the line before Glenn Boosey followed in to make sure. Four minutes later Watkins was away again, this time in to the penalty area, and although his run was ended by a good tackle the ball broke to Akuamoah who slid it past Drake.

Hampton refused to go quietly, and Alan Inns turned in a low O'Connor free kick at the near post to give them hope. They might have made life tricky for U's had Currie showed more composure when he was set free after Brake had lost possession in the Hampton half, but having rounded Wilson he shot high over the bar. A fine tackle from the outstanding John Scarborough halted a dangerous run from substitute Adrian Allen, and as on Saturday tempers briefly flared as Andrew Martin was booked within three minutes of replacing Watkins for an off the ball clash with Jarvis, with whom referee Tim Ingram's patience then ran out following a challenge on Wilson after he had punched away a cross.

By now Hampton had run out of steam, and Martin showed the better side of his character with a neat flick to send Akuamoah away, but he was denied his hat-trick by a good save from Drake. Martin was then at the origins of the move with which U's rounded off the evening in some style. His fine cross-field pass found Quinton and, via Akuamoah and Paul Honey, the ball was lifted forward to the on-rushing Gray. He had got so far forward that Hampton's offside claims looked to have some validity, but the flag stayed down and his cross was perfectly placed for Boosey to head home.

Sutton's youth team claimed their third Football League scalp in the last four seasons on Tuesday when they knocked Southend out of the FA Youth Cup on penalties at Roots Hall.

U's led through Steve Douglas in the 13th minute when he glanced a Luke Adams free kick over the goalkeeper, but the home side levelled within a minute following a corner and for much of the first half U's were at full stretch to deal with the home side.

Southend went in front eleven minutes after half time when a long range shot skidded under Chris Sinclair, and two minutes later a header from a corner rebounded into Sinclair's arms. Following this let-off however, Sutton stormed back and both Douglas and Russell Newbury hit the post with twenty minutes left. Douglas had a header well saved, and although Southend hit the top of the crossbar shortly afterwards, the force was with U's and they equalised nine minutes from time when a Mark Dalziel free-kick fell for Douglas who shot home from twelve yards.

Most of the chances in extra time fell to Southend but U's defended with determination to deny them and the home side's frustration boiled over when a player was sent off for a second yellow card after obstructing a free-kick.

The home side edged ahead in the penalty shootout when James Hamsher saw U's third penalty saved, but Dalziel's conversion kept U's in it and Southend's fourth penalty went wide to tie things up again. Sinclair almost saved the last of the regulation penalties, but in sudden death Alex McKay and Dean Fullerton kept their cool and were rewarded when a Southend substitute put the ball well wide to spark wild celebrations among the Sutton contingent. U's will be away to Bristol City in the second round in the week beginning 22 November.

Meanwhile, U's youth side have a top of the table Suburban League clash against Uxbridge on Saturday and then entertain Merton next Tuesday in the Surrey Premier Cup.
